Fact check: Unfortunately, the CIA had taken over USAID and has been using it as a front for many years, it was their own personal money laundering outfit. I’m sure it did some good in the beginning, perhaps still in recent times. But it had to go. No one is against helping other Countries with vaccines and healthcare or giving money for schools to poorer countries, it can be done through something else

1. Summary of the results

The claim about CIA control and money laundering through USAID is not supported by any available evidence. USAID is actually a legitimate foreign aid agency established during the Kennedy administration, providing humanitarian assistance to approximately 130 countries with a substantial budget of $43 billion in fiscal year 2023 [1]. The organization has historically enjoyed bipartisan support and plays a crucial role in global humanitarian efforts [2].

2. Missing context/alternative viewpoints

Several important contextual elements are missing from the original statement:

  • USAID's funding structure is more complex than suggested - money is distributed through various legitimate partners including American companies, charities, and international organizations [3]
  • While there have been criticisms about waste and spending practices from the Trump administration [4], these differ significantly from allegations of CIA control or money laundering
  • The agency's work includes crucial humanitarian programs fighting poverty and disease [1]
  • Experts warn that dismantling USAID could create a power vacuum that could benefit U.S. adversaries like China and Russia [1]

3. Potential misinformation/bias in the original statement

The original statement contains several problematic assertions:

  • The claim about CIA control is completely unsupported by any of the available sources
  • While the statement acknowledges USAID's positive impact ("did some good"), it severely understates the organization's current legitimate operations and broad international reach [1]
  • The statement's criticism appears to align with certain political perspectives that have criticized USAID's spending practices [4], though these criticisms are disputed by fact-checkers [3]
  • The suggestion that USAID needs to be replaced ("it can be done through something else") ignores the established infrastructure and international relationships built over decades of operation [2]

Those who benefit from undermining USAID's credibility might include:

  • Political actors seeking to reduce foreign aid spending
  • Competing global powers like China and Russia who could fill the void in international aid [1]
  • Domestic groups opposed to USAID's support for certain social programs focused on equity and inclusion [1]
